Coating on sinker nails?

I used 12d sinkers on a small project over the last couple of days ('cause that's what I had on hand...), and by the time I'd driven a few dozen nails I noticed the yellow-ish coating on the nails was coming off onto my hands. That just made me curious, prompting me to ask: what's the coating material, and is it in any way hazardous?

The coating should be cement. It melts as the nail is driven, then glues it in place.
