Is it possible to stain cherry wood? I bought some nice cherry doors and all my mouldings are stained cherry and I would like everything to match. I heard that if you stain cherry that it will become splotchy. Any ideas?
Is your trim really Cherry or is it poplar or maple "stained cherry"?
This is the first time I have heard of it being necessary to pre-condition Cherry. I have worked with it for years without any problem with oil based stains. Water based stains have caused me more problems with Cherry.
A lot of cherry act differently depening on the moisture, age, etc. The easist thing to do is try some test pieces until you make it match in color, then you have to try and match your finish.
Problem with mixing cherry with non-cherry stained to look like cherry is that real cherry gets darker with age. So if you match it now it probably won't match in a couple years.

cherry is a soft wood . it can stain blochy to test this use a test pice first.if it does think about usine a dyestain that soaks in more evenly. there are a lot of factors of blochy look one is oil in the wood 2 previos stains 3 never use a water base stain .if u use dye mix it with a alchol base like shelaicc
