Ceiling support for partition wall?

I have a finished room where I want to put up a simple partition wall and make it two rooms.

I know where I want to put the partition wall frame. I also found the two lateral studs in the existing wall where I can screw the partition wall to. The floor is hard wood, so I am guessing that I can just screw the partition wall down into the floor.

The problem comes now. On the existing ceiling, there is no stud over where the top plate of the partition wall frame should go. How can I fix the top plate? Do I just screw the top plate into the drywall of the ceiling?

Thanks a lot.

you will likely need to add some type of blocking between your ceiling joists so that you have something to fasten your top plate into. You don't want to fasten the top plate to drywall only.

I am sure there are others here more experienced than myself that can give you more detailed advice.

Tom hit it on the head. You need to install blocking.

Ceiling support for partition wall?

I just checked (by tapping through the ceiling). I think that the ceiling joints are going perpendicularly with the partition wall. In this case can I just screw the top plae of the partition wall into the joints of the ceiling?

Yes, you can use the method you described.
I guess you lucked out on that one.

I need a lot of luck when dealing with wood. I will use a stud finder to make sure that I am lucked out this time. Thanks a lot for your help.
