ceiling molding

Has anyone used or have examples of using 'flat' molding around the ceiling instead of crown or cove molding? I want to add something to my ceilings but maybe a little more subtle than a traditional crown. Would it be unheard of to use casing along the ceiling?

Iy might look a little anemic, especially in a larger room. You might try building up a series of flat moldings to give it some character.
It's a, "personal taste" thing.

A casing or baseboard is not unheard of. I like the idea above of a built up trim.

It can be done. The idea of molding on the ceiling is to create a shadowed effect which breaks the line between the wall and ceiling allowing the illusion of a higher ceiling. The angled crown does this better than square lines would.

I saw a presentation on an "affordable" building in Atlanta. The architechect specified two 1x4s as crown molding. One went up flat on the ceiling first, and then the other went flat on the wall under it. He had a picture and I thought it looked pretty good.
