Can you Do this? pictures/ on a deck...

To start: this is NOT my deck, its a neighbors I was looking under, I immediately see other things done wrong but try to stick to that post

I have a post that is similar to this hitting my joist and I'm going to add a pergola, my plan was to buy 16' support posts run them through the deck, and up another 8' for my railing and then pergola support. This only happened in one spot.

My posts are notched and my outside board is (2) 2x10's, so mine would have a 3" notch while it goes through the deck.

Questions:
Is this legal?
Should I consider it? (mine will be notched posts like most decks without a beam and cantilever)

Or should I just have my support post be only support post for the deck and have it notch into the deck a few inches, then start a new 8' 6x6 above that being notched down 6-8" and bolted for my railing and pergola support?

The hanger doesn't even look like it is up tight to the bottom of the joist.

I'd be more concerned about what is keeping the guard post from acting like a lever and pulling the rim joist off the ends of the joists ......

The bearing point is back at the beam... That hanger is not really doing anything.

I would highly recommend your downloading and reading the American Wood Council's "Prescriptive Residential Wood Deck Construction Guide," which is based upon the 2009 International Residential Code. This code may or may not apply to your local jurisdiction.

This guide was written due to the many deck collapses that have occurred over the past few years, and the injuries and deaths they caused.

This will indicate that notching of guard posts is not allowed based upon the required 200 lbs point load anywhere along the guard.

Again, your area may allow notching of guards, then again it may not. I would inquire with my local building department for guidance.

whats even keeping that post locked into place. every time i set posts for a handrail i install blocking around it so it ties it to the joists on either side and greately reduces any chance of movement.. maybe then you could run a joist into it

thanks for the link. Everything seems good except for a few things on my end.

Seems I should Triple my "trimmer" joist. ...I can add that in still.

And NO NOTCHING on guard posts..? that's kind of a biggie.

It seems that 90% of decks in my area, even put up this year by companies, have notched guard posts. Most use the support post as the guard post with a 1.5"-3" notch and 2 bolts.

Hmmm, any opinions on this anyone?
I planned on this post going even farther and supplying as my pergola support.

Can you do this??? Absolutely, you can!!! Look at the pics. It already has been proven it can be done.
