"air is going through the tank"?
What does that mean exactly?

sounds like "car for sale runs great needs new engine!"

is the drain valve closed, if the motor is running and its not filling up theres a good chance the diaphram is gone. this is typical of oil less compressors. the porter cable pancakes suffer from this, the solution .... buy a new compressor , as reccommended by the repair shop guys

Step 1. Take the top off of the pump. There's a chance that there is debris stuck in the intake valve. This will allow the intake air to be exhausted back out and not build tank pressure. I've seen this occur on a 150 dollar oil-less pancake compressor, as well as an 800 dollar blue Emglo. It's worth a shot before replacing.

I think that the above is good advice. You could also try to hard wire it so in is on. Make sure you buy another more quality unit soon you will be glad you did.
