PaliBob, Sorry i did not realize that the picture showen was malimine i thought this was the same type of construction as my fireplace but the fireplace i am mimicing is definitely not malimine.

Joecaption, So i believe you are suggesting i would have 1 sheet of 3/4" ply and a 1.5" face frame correct?

I would like for the entire shelf to have the same 1.5" thickness. I realize that 2 pieces of 3/4" is over kill and expensive but so far it seems like the best option. Am I correct in what you were suggesting? If so do you agree with the 2 ply idea?

Thanks again for all the help guys, I hope to get the drawings done in the next day or two. I would love to start collecting materials this weekend if i feel like i have a solid plan.

Ok so I have completed some drawings. One is a drawing of the final product and one is a structural drawing to help convey my ideas and make it easier to plan the materials required. I like this idea and it will seem over kill for the shelves structural integrity but it gives me the look I desire. The plywood on the vertical parts will be . Let me know of any more thoughts or suggestions.

Fireplace in the middle and the two cabinets I will build beside it.

This is a drawing of just the right hand cabinet. I hope this makes sense

Here is a picture of the fireplace I am building beside. I removed the trim on it already so I can build flush to it.

Mike, I think your design is over complicated and may
stretch your skills to the breaking point.
My advice would be to shop around your sketch to your
local Plywood sources to get other opinions.
Two areas of concern:
  1. The bottom storage area behind the doors, needs shelves
  2. The dead void at the very top should be eliminated
