It's 28 inches deep which allows for things like bench top drill presses, etc to sit on it with room. I went 1 1/2 inches thick because there are times where I have heavy items such as snowmobile engines. I covered it with thicker galvanized tin so oil, etc could be wiped off and not soak in to the wood. Plus, its very smooth and easy to sweep up dust, dirt, etc.
I'm not sure I would use diamond plate since it has raised ridges which won't allow things to sit evenly or flush and you don't want bench top tools wobbling. Plus the raised diamond checkers would make brushing the dirt, dust, etc off it more difficult.
But to each their own.
