Default Building soffit

To cover the duct work, I need to build a soffit. I searched the internet and found 2 common ways of doing it, using 2x2 for the plates and rip plywood for the sides; and another way I saw was use 2x2s and build like a ladder sideways. Is one better than the other? Does it depend on the weight it'll support?

thanks

Is in the center or along a corner? If a corner use a method like or with plywood on the side. keep in mind the fireblocking.

This example shows a 1/2" sheet of gypsum (drywall) against the wall studs as the fireblock. Or you could use a sheet of plywood. Another way would be to use a 2 x 4 between each vertical stud on the wall where the soffit meets the wall.

Nice illustration. Clear, and concise.

I think you will be implementing a little bit of both methods. Building soffits for basements is a kinda "design-as-you-build" project.
