Building a deck over patio

I am building a deck over a patio. The frost line here in St. louis is about 30-36". I only have about 13.5" fromthe top of the patio to the bottom of the back door to work with so I have to use 2x8's for the beams and 2x6's for joists. I'll have to put 4 posts over the slab. So my question is do i have to pour footings through holes cut out of the slab to the frost line? if so would it be easier to remove the slab? The slab is against the house.

I don't think it's ever appropriate to rest a structure on a slab.

What Ron said. The slab will move with freeze/thaw cycles. You need footers for support, below the frost line.
