Build bookcase help

I want to build a custom bookcase out of plywood. I like the modern look of the thicker panels (~2") similar to this ikea bookcase. Ikea is a honeycomb paper core inside thin wood veneers. What's the best way to achieve this look with stuff I can buy at big box stores? Doubling up on plywood seem like a waste of material and unnecessary weight. i do need it to be sturdy though.
