Question

boxing in HVAC ducting

I need to box in my HVAC ducting but the span including the main house beam is over 5ft. can I use 2x3 studs to hold up the dry wall laying them flat? or do I need to stand them up, Or should I go to a 2x4 that is standing up?

boxing in HVAC ducting

I normally do mine with steel studs and hat track (sometimes called hat channel).

Stud out the vertical "sides" with steel studs, and then use hat track (the profile reminds you of a hat) to connect the 2. Its a ridgid assembly and wont bow, warp or twist.

Goggle hat track. Should be available wherever steel studs are sold.

hello?....I guess I didnt answer yur question. Of the choices you provided I guess I'd go with 2x3 uprite.

Dont forget the permit and a means of egress.
