Default Botched stair treads

Help! A complete and total idiot (though well-meaning) covered the existing astair treads with new treads and cut the old bullnoses off in a really ragged way so that in some places only half an inch is resting on the riser. How can I fix this? Someone suggested going in from the back and gluing a piece of wood to the back of the riser.
