There are many ways to do this, the most common I think for carpenters on the job is to mark the cut on the rafter, then use a skill-saw (circular saw) to make both cuts, flip the rafter over and continue the cuts.
After this the bird's mouth will not be fully cut through so knock out the remainder with your hammer and use a hand saw for the rest of the through cut.
It's hard for a hit and run scammer to get by here, eh?
