the best waterproofing stain

I just purchased some 1x8 tight knot cedar planks to use as risers on my deck stairs. They will get wet though not get directly rained on.

So what is the best stain/sealer to keep them looking good and somewhat watertight?

BTW the steps are made of Timber Tech composite, an expensive mistake in my opinion, (looks like plastic). I will no doubt replace it with real wood maybe next year.
