Best type of material for shelving

I am building garage shelving that is going to be suspended. I am guessing that it will hold up to 100pds. What suggestions do you all have as to the type of material that I can use for the shelves? I don't need the material to be pretty. I am looking for something that is sturdy yet cost effective. What do you think?

Why does it need to be suspended?
A few 2 X 4's and some plywood will work.

you'll have to look into what your ceiling will support weight wise if you suspend it. I would suspect even doing some type of cantilever off the wall would let you raise the weight limit for sure.

I was just wanting input on suggestions on about different types of materials that might be used in place of plywood(i.e MDF or other types of material etc.) that might be just as strong and sturdy and might be more cost effective. Thanks!

What do you want to store?
What material(s) do you have access to?

I've seen pieces of unistrut suspended in sequence to hold boards.
Similar could be done with black or galv pipe.

For best all around performance and value...forget OSB or MDF....depending on support and span...1/2", 5/8" or 3/4" is your best material.

I've used Melamine for shelves in my garage....but....I attached a strip of SS to both the front and back edges of the material to keep it stiff

Basically always try to select the best type of material. Don't compromise on quality.

Particle board and MDF will eventually sag under their own weight let alone any additional load. I would use 1X as a first choice or 1/2" OSB set into a 2X2 frame.
