Best material for laminating formica

Am building a bar and plan on laminating with formica. I need a material that is strong enough to span a 28" wide by 60"long by 1.5" thick section without sagging, but is smooth enough to accept the cement and form a nice bond with the laminate without coming loose down the road. I am not sure mdf or particle board will do the job without sagging over time and not sure if osb is smooth enough. I am leaning towards a nice smooth plywood but it is a lot more expensive. Any thoughts?

You could try laminating 3 layers of 1/2" plywood. Use a spreadable adhesive so you get complete adhesion. Use a lot of weights, again for even distribution. If it is going to free span most of the distance you could even force a slight crown into it. Put shims under it with thicker ones in the center gradually using thinner ones toward the ends. You only have to use a good piece for the top layer, AB or lumber core, that should be cheaper than one thick sheet.

2 sheets of 3/4" BC plywood would work well, I sure wouldn't use OSB board.

high density particle board with 1x3 pine, or maybe hardwood, glued/screwed across the 28" part to give it rigidity

I always face my laminate counters with Oak (or another Hardwood), whether it's exposed or not.

they 1 1/8" particle board then add some 3/8" to get the thickness you want. the sheets of particle board that were 1 1/8" thick were 5x12' some heavy stuff!

Lot's of good info, thanks everyone. I need to laminate the bottom as well since its is very exposed so i think i will go with three layers of 1/2" bc; i can get it done with one 4x8 sheet so that should help me keep it simple.

Thanks again!
