Not sure what you mean wooden or custom? Custom being something other than wood I take it? Whether wood or other material...

One increasingly nice option is the higher end (not particle board Ikea crap) RTA---ready to assemble (or sometimes called flat pack) furniture. You can get some really nicely designed and manufactured hardwood furnishings for a fraction of what assembled furniture costs. There are nice pieces out of other materials as well. You do have to put it together yourself or there are companies that do nothing but assemble the stuff.

RTA and flat pack has the advantage of much lower shipping costs since shipping is based mostly on volume and not weight. It comes with all the hardware and you need minimal tools to put it together. Much of it is not a one person job though.

Unfinished furniture used to be somewhat of a bargain. I am not sure there is a real price advantage anymore given what it costs and what it costs just in materials to finish it.

Bedroom furniture

only furniture in my bedroom is a desk, bookshelf, 2 tables and my bed. Desk, tables, and bookshelf are laminate-covered particle board from Walmart, and the bed is handmade, from 2x6's standing on the 2" edges, screwed to the headboard and a short piece of 2x6 on the foot, and 5 pieces of 2x4 laid side to side across them, screwed down with 2.5" screws. They are suitable for us, a young couple just starting out. Someday we might upgrade, but for now they work well
