bath panel replacement

I have a normal plastic bath with an ugly front plastic panel. Ends of bath are wall-to-wall. Tap is in middle at back.
I really want to replace the ugly panel with something that looks a bit more appealing (moulded wood/ tongue and groove were what I initially thought. The problem is that I reckon I only have 1cm depth to play with and the wooden panel I looked at was 6cm deep! The metal bath supports are what prevent me putting something thicker in. The 2nd prob is that we have a couple of times had a prob with tap overflow and hence have needed to pull panel out for access under the bath so whatever we do we don't want it too permanent in case of emergency pipe issues again!
Can anyone recommend a solution please? No one in my family remotely good at DIY and we don't want to replace whole bath at this stage.
THanks v much.

It sounds like this is in the shower. If so, no wood. If it's not, post a photo of the situation.
