Not worried about code here or anything, but am planning on putting a door into an unfinished basement storage area. The problem is this area has a soffit that drops the ceiling height to 6'4. My preference with doors would be prehung to install myself, but I don't want to drop the door knob down 7" if there's a better option. And the 7 inches isn't even counting the cripplers that "should" go above the door. So, does anyone have any good suggestions for a door in a 6'4 space? (by the way, I'm counting a 2" jamb, real height is 6'6 but I do want a finished look at least from one side).
Solid core flat door.........can be cut to suit the opening, put the door knob where you want it. A hollow core door can also be cut down, but requires a bit more work to add back the solid piece in the cut end. Raised panel door would require too much cutting and look odd, and a custom door is way too expensive for this door.
....this requires a little more work. Remove the door from the jamb. Cut off the top of the door and fill void. Dissassemble jamb and cut off the tops of the legs to required length. Reassemble jamb and install.
