Attic trusses and proper roof pitch

I am in the process of designing a single story 2000 square foot house because in all the plan books I've looked at, nothing fits exactly what I want. When we're finally ready to build, I will turn things over to a draftsman and engineer to actually draw up the blueprints and make sure everything will work and then bid it out to a GC for construction. What I'm wondering about is the use of attic trusses and what is the minimum roof pitch needed to make things work in a bonus room/attic storage space. I guess what I mean is for maximum headroom, etc. The trusses would span 38 feet.

I realize the draftsman and engineer will be able to give me the info, but that could be a while off as my wife and I are unsure when we can actually start building (could be a couple of years from now or longer). For my own knowledge at this point, I would like to know, is an 8/12 pitch enough or does it have to go 10/12. Also, as an aside, I realize the steeper the pitch, the more expensive it is to roof it, but is there that big a difference in the costs between an 8/12 or 10/12 roof system?

Hope this makes sense. I would appreciate any information you can give me.

with a 8/12 pitch you will have a ridge height off about 14+ ft. and with a 12/12 pitch a height of 17+ ft. You should also check with your town and see if they have any height restrictions. and start from there and also take into consideration that these rafters are going to be long in length which will add some premium price to the lumber, As far as roofing labor costs, an 8/12 and 12/12 pitch should be about the same. Good luck BOB
