Default Attic ceiling - beadboard plywood need substrate?

I am currently insulating the space between the rafters of my "attic", which has headroom enough to be living space. I would like to put up beadboard plywood as a ceiling finish to save costs. My understanding is it comes in 1/4" thickness. My rafters are 2x8's @ 12" O.C. With that spacing, do I need a substrate for the plywood, or can/should I apply it directly to the underside of rafters? Thanks in advance.

tp....I wouldnt use 1/4". May became wavy over time. Try 3/8" which should be available at your local lumberyard.

Oh...and dont forget rafter vents.
