Angled Crown Return

I'm looking to build a return where the crown stops at the angled wall (staircase) and ceiling. The angle of the staircase coming down is 49 degrees. The idea of what I'm trying to do is have the return follow that 49 degree angle. Thank you in advance for helping

dont try to do it that way just return it into the wall like any other return. terminate it before you get into the portion of hte wall that is angled

Crown does not get attached to angled walls. Looks beyond goofy. Leave it alone and let the angle cut through. You will want to trim that long run your molding trim to match though.

Paint the angled wall a different color or shade of what you have and accent it rather than try to hide it.

Not a good look---if you want crown on the angled area---build a small wood 'soffit' so the crown is attached to a flat 'wall' that is 90* from the ceiling.

If you have a table saw this will be simple---fast--and look good.

Hugh? I guess? You sure buddy? You would box the angled section square to accomodate crown? Will not the bottom of the soffit end up the level of the top of the door frame and leave like an 18" sliver of ceiling showing. And how would explain the bottom of the soffit looking worse than the staircase angle and just hanging there?

"Built it to accomodate crown at the ceiling" just isn't going to float by boat on this.

I was not sure how to describe that trim detail---the box work would be only 1/4" lower than the crown---and the bottom only abut 3 1/2" wide

Not much room for 2 pieces of crown there. just return it into the wall close to the end.

Sorry Mike, must agree on this one. The overall space is too small to get tricky. And no matter how you try to square off the angle coming through it, you push trim on one side right up to the other visually and really. Better hope it all matches up or it will look realy bad.

Trim off the long length. Leave the rest alone.

Hi can anyone give me a tip how to make a miter cut for 135 degree angle . I know I have to cut my trim at 62.5 degrees, but my miter saw only goes to 45 degrees.

Where did you get that number?

If it is accurate---you will need to chop a block of scrap to 45* --nest it against the fence---then move the head to 27 1/2*

what kind of corner are you cutting that has such a goofy angle?

I have done it many times like Mike described and it always looked good. It looks like there is enough room to do that from the picture. If that doesn't appeal to you just make a kill block there, or like Kirk said, return before the angle.

I'm sort of with Mike on this one.

The difference being that I would drop the entire area in that recess, so the ceiling height in there is about 1 or 2 inches below the bottom edge of the crown molding.

That way your molding would run straight across to the corner.


It's either that or have a return prior to the angled wall ending.
