We have a manufactured home on a slab and an attached garage to it, the garage has a 8" floating slab and 2x4 construction we want to add a second floor to this garage, the garage is 16'wx30'deep, the 16' side is attached to the home as far as i can tell, we live in Minnesota and have had no issues with either one of the buildings moving due to frost, any help would be appreciated.
Normally adding above a garage requires a building permit, so the first place to start is with your local code enforcement official. Beyond that, you need a design for the project, which could be obtained from a standard book on framing. You will need to determine if your foundation is adequate to support a second story, the code official may be able to help, else you may need an engineer or architect to help out.
If you are planning on creating living space above a garage, there are lots of issues like exhaust fumes, fire protection etc., no doubt the code official will steer you in the right direction.
