Where oh where have my gigabyte's gone...
Where oh where can they be????
OS= Windows Vista Home.
So last week, I did an OS reinstall. Before I did that it was telling me my c drive only had 60 gigs available of 136.
After the reinstall, it was the same. But I did not do a format. I just did a reinstall.
Last night I got bired and decide toi do the reinstall again, but this time with formatting.
Afterwards, it said I had 120 gigs free of 136.
I had nothing on this computer other than programs. I save everything-pics, vids, docs, music...to external drives.
I started putting my programs back on the machine, and it seems I am losing an inordinate amount of gigs.
After installing itunes, quickbooks, photoshop, Adobe reader, mcafee, office '03 and Firefox, I was down to 105 gigs available.
I did a disk cleanup, and LOST a gig. I went into control panel and UNINSTALLED some crap I didn't need/want and again, LOST 3 gigs.
I did a defrag, and LOST gigs.
WYF is going on? I have yet to save anything on this machine, and after deleting, cleaning up and defragging, I went from 103 available to 98 available.
How do I lose 5 gigs REMOVING stuff?
Restore points. Nearly 30 of them.
All gone now.
Yup. That is one of the "features" of vista....allowing you to go back a point in time. What mosts people don't realize is that every major change(install/reinstall/remove software) results in a new restore point.
I knew it created them. i just wasn't aware of how many it saved and much space it required.
I usually delete the partition and reformat.
Yeah...the restore points are annoying sometimes.
