Question

starting a webpage disign business

I am currently building a webpage advertising my webpage building services. I have had webpage design classes and am pretty confident on my ability to build webpages whether it be for personal or business however there is one part of the business im not to sure about. I've currently got the webpage set up with information on ordering by sending payment and or information you want in the website, etc. The way I've set it up is by sending payments and info by us mail or sending info by us mail and making payment using paypal which I have a link to on my website but Im thinking that I should allow the customer to wait until the website is done before having to make payment so that he can determine if it suits him or not and what changes he or she would like made. How would I do this and be sure that I get paid and not ripped off in any way such as the customer getting a website and Me not getting paid for it? pwhite254@charter.net

Setup their site on your server under a folder that they can look at play with and use until your paid. Then you can transfer the site to their domain. Also you can place a layer with a graphic over the pages stating your name or something. Like a watermark.
Or you can just build the pages, do a screen snapshot of each page and send them the images of each page. This way there is no code to see touch or steal.

Do some reseach on contract and proposal writing. Lay out what they get for what money, how changes and corrections will be handle. Set up your billing xx percent to start, xx when you think 80% done, and balance when customer recieves. It will help make sure customer in serious.

Also, don't fill the website with real text. Fill it with junk. The customer should be able to judge your work.

And charge seperately for artwork and logos. To do a professional job you should get to know some artists (if you're not one yourself). Good artwork will really make the difference.

I used to work with an artist when I was doing web pages. If you want, I can ping her and see if she's still in the business. I think so. She was a good graphic artist type, came up with some nice stuff.

I am new here, and it's been about 1-1/2 months since your post

how is the website coming?
who is your target market?

I took a few classes and found the school only wanted to teach tech stuff

are you a copywriter? a content or article writer? how are your SEO skills?

This is what our website designer did, its really effective because it ensures both parties keep working hard to get satisfactory results.

Post your link and let us have a look at the page will ya!

Best of luck!

yup, that's about how we did ours. I think we did 33% upfront, 33% at 75% completion point, the rest after we were given the keys
