How can I access free word processing software?

when you save, look for extension options. "Save AS:", then choose .doc or .txt or whatever....

If it's all text, try save as txt.

When I created the document and gave it the .doc extension, it looked good while in OpenOffice. Then I went into AOL and opened my File link. It did not list my document as a "supported file." Then, when I tried to open it, it gave me the error: The file may not be supported by AOL.

What are you trying to use to open it with when you are in AOL ?
If your default is set to open with another program it will come out as gibberish

I'm in my AOL program trying to open the file name.

After I saved the document using the .txt format, it gave me the following error: This document may contain formatting or content that cannot be saved in the text file format. Do you want to save the document in this format anyway? Then it gives me 2 options to click on: KEEP CURRENT FORMAT or SAVE IN ODF FORMAT.

Why are you trying to open a DOC file using AOL ?
AOL does not know how to open the file as far as I know
If the default program to open DOC files is not set right then it won't work

I've always opened my documents through AOL. That's the only way I know how to do it.

Say I was going to email someone and send them that document as an attachment. I would want to have access to that document while in AOL so I could attach it.

Also, if I'm in a Web site that wants me to send the document through the "Browse" box, I think I would have to be in my Internet Service Provider (AOL) to do that.

No. I have Roadrunner Light (broadband).

Yes.

I had Microsoft Word until my computer crashed, and then I lost that software. My computer didn't come with disks to load---it was already loaded, so I have no disks to use.

You should still have Wordpad to do documents with.. also Notepad for small text files.

What OS are you using ?
I'd definitely dump AOL
If you have Roadrunner it does not make sense to pay a monthly fee to AOL
