How can I access free word processing software?

I have a 4-year-old Compaq computer. When it crashed, it lost the word processing software that was already installed on it. It was Microsoft Word or Works, something like that. Anyone know how I can easily access a free word processing software so I can go back to creating documents on my computer?

LOL yep,
I've tried openoffice, it's pretty good. I use MS Office, however, because I get it from my work for $19.

Google Docs is a nice alternative also. It's all cloud (internet) based and you can access and share it anywhere with whomever you feel the need to share with. Also has some collaboration options where multiple people can edit at the same time.

Wonderful! Two different options to try. Which is the easiest one to use? I just need a basic one. Also, I was on a Web site yesterday where it asked that I upload a document by using their "Browse" box. Can I do that with either of these sites that you guys recommended?

dunno about googledocs, but openO resides on your machine, not off site.

different strokes.

they are both pretty similar in terms of interface, although i would guess openoffice is a little more robust but its been quite a while since i've used either. like clutch i get office through work on the cheap.

I'm downloading openoffice right now. It says that it has 21 hours left to download. Wonder why it says that? I have broadband.

DangerMouse 03-25-2010 11:19 AM

sheesh.... maybe they're having server problems? It happens....

Maybe if you stop it and resume/start over, it'll hook up faster?

Question: When I go to download it, do I want to click "RUN" or "SAVE"?
