what should i do with this tractor, fix it or resell it?

hi all
i recently picked up a mtd 12.5 hp lawn tractor cheap
owner said it has an electrical problem and won't turn over
but motor and tranny is good and has a new starter
first there was gas in the crank case which he says is from tilting on and off the truck
so i drained it and added fresh oil and next replaced the spark plug
the battery was dead and i charged it and is good
i cleaned out the gas tank and replaced the rubber gas line and fill it with fresh gas, so far no gas in the crank case:thumbsup:
so i tried starting it and the starter gear winded but it did not turn the engine
over instead it got stuck and i had to knock down with a hammer
i think the seller lied to me about the electrical problem and the starter is bad
i don't know what to do
i could buy a new starter but i fear engine or tranny could be bad
is there any way i can start it without the starter?
the tractor is in good shape

I'd say you bought your mower from a "less than honest" seller. You will NOT get gas in your oil simply from tilting the mower as it's going on/off the pickup. So who knows what else he was "creative" about telling you?

First of all, there's about a 90% chance the battery is shot. To find out for sure, jump start the tractor off your car/truck. If it turns over and starts fine, you've identified your problem.

If it is the starter that's bad, you're going to spend about $50 to get a new one. Is it worth it? I don't know. The problem is that this might be one of many problems with the mower. But you can't really know that unless you run some of them down & fix them.

Good luck!

Either they run when you get them... or they don't.
This applies to any used thing with an engine and moving parts.

If not running... then it's a parts machine and nothing more;
and worth *at the most* $50 (if everything is there).

On that basis and assuming you have the space and time a pile of other old mowers to steal parts off of and skill to do all this tinkering and futzing... then sure, why not buy it. It'll keep you off he streets and you can always part it out and get your money back.

Still... don't count on making it into a runner.
