Weed Eater blowing black smoke

Have Weed Eater Featherlite SST25C. In second season of use has been blowing black smoke out exhaust. I could be mistaken but the source of smoke could be dark oil that I see dripping on the hot metal frame around exhaust. Where is the oil drip/leak coming from? and /or the black smoke?

The problem with your Weed Eater is that it's a consumer piece of junk..

Ok.. now that I got that out of the way...

Dripping oil? Isn't that a 2 stroke unit?
Are you mixing the oil properly? You should purchase a high quality synthetic 2 stroke oil and it must be mixed with scientific precision.. I use a plastic syringe to measure the oil and a gallon milk jug to measure the gas.

If you mix in too much oil, you could very easily plug up your exhaust screen.. Inside your muffler is a screen (spark arrest device) that can quickly become clogged up with soot from fuel that is too rich in oil. You'll normally lose lots of power too when this happens.

Get a commercial quality unit like a Redmax or Shindawia or Stihl.... Even an Echo... most everything else is junk....

Thanks PaulBob, definitely a 2 stroker and I mixed the gas and synthetic oil with precision 40 to 1. Am chem eng for 50 and am accustomed to mix proportions. That's why I was mystified by the apparent oil drippings around the exhaust but even a bit running on the plastic casing. Agree must be a piece of junk!

They're just junk because they don't last very long.. But it shouldn't be dripping oil if the oil is properly mixed into the gasoline..

Are you sure its oil? Could it be fuel that has turned black from soot or carbon buildup?

Thanks again PaulBob, Yes it could be fuel with soot, possibly from the exhaust screen/spark arrestor. In any case I'm going to do a test with some reblended fuel

Check you air cleaner to make sure it isn't dirty or otherwise blocked.

Smoke or exhaust? If smoke then maybe a leak. If exhaust wouldn't black be running too rich? Check choke / carb for adjustment.

I thought blue was too much oil. Black was too much gas?

I ruled out too much gas because consumer carbs are all non-adjustable today.. There's no way to make the carb too rich as far as I know.. only to put too much oil in..

Am I mistaken??

You're right that they're non adjustable. I was thinking along the lines of a damaged jet or choke issue.

If a gas mix issue then the easiest way to test is with a fresh tank of fuel. Op has probably figured it out since we haven't heard back for a bit.
