Toro Commercial mower dying

Hi Everyone,
So I have a Toro Commercial mower that my brother gave me about four seasons ago, he used it to mow lawns with it but wound up selling his business. Have never had any problems with the mower, other than normal maintenance issues.

A week or so ago it started doing something weird, it would run normally for about 45 minutes then throttle down and die on me, I have to wait about thirty minutes then it will start right back up and mow for a little while then die again. I have replaced the fuel line, taken off carb bowl and cleaned, and checked spark plug. Any suggestions as to what may be causing this too happen, anything common I should check for?

Thank you.

I'm gonna assume it's something basic and suggest that you stick with the basics done completely before doing anything else.

Start with the complete spring tune up job.
New oil, new oil filter, new air filter, new plugs, valve adjustment?
Do whatever the owners manual and engine call for.

Then report back.

After that... you're probably up for the "after X hours" deeper job.
But don't cross that bridge until you get there.

As Tarheel said, a complete annual maintenance would a good place to start; some engine have an oil monitor, in which case dirty or old oil can shut the engine off. Included in your maintenance, even though this would normally show up sooner, make sure that it has the correct fuel cap, then clean the cap itself; a plugged vent in the cap will create a vacuum in the tank, effectively shutting off the flow of fuel. After that, the next time that it stops on you, check to see if it has spark, in order to determine if it is a fuel or electrical problem.

Thanks for the quick replies, I will start with the annual tune up. Good idea about the oil monitor and the fuel cap I will definitely try to look into those when I am doing the tune up. Will post back with results, probably a week or so.

Thanks again!

Toro Commercial mower dying

Saturday I did all of the scheduled maintenance for the mower, air filter, spark plug, oil, and oil filter also cleaned the bottom of the deck really well.

After that it started right up and ran while I mowed my yard and the neighbors without dying or even sputtering so I guess that fixed the issue. For now I am keeping my fingers crossed that it was one of those and the issue has been fixed.

I appreciate all the feedback and help!
