Did it EVER start?
If so... when was the last time that YOU had it running?

btw... what inspired you to do all that work to it?

I'd suggest that you find a local small engine mechanic to come by and go over it with you.

yes it will start but it is smoking and it sounds like it on its last leg. and I replaced everything because they kept telling me at the parts house that it was the coil and then they told me to clean the carburator and then replace the battery, because it would be running and just quit running and then i let it set awhile and then it would start. so that is when i started replacing everything.

and the mower will start and after you let it set there for awhile it will straighten out and run right.

So... If it will start up and run fine for awhile (are we talking a few seconds, a few minutes, until it gets hot, what?) your basic operating system is okay. For instance, if your coil was shot, it wouldn't start at all.

You're then left with the pretty sure bet that it's your fuel system. Basically, it starts then runs out of gas.

My best guess is that something is messed up with the float/needle valve in your carb. It maybe adjusted wrong, and not allowing enough gas to get in.

Do you have a good flow of gas to the carb? If you do, the problem is in the carb. If you do not, you could also have a plugged gas line filter - or a filter that's installed backwards. You could also have something in your gas tank that gets sucked down to the hole & shuts off the flow of gas, then when the engine dies it floats back up to the top of the tank. It's also remotely possible that you have a gas tank valve turned off.

I start the lawn mower and it will run a a very short time. But while it is running there is black smoke and missing really bad. So i have changed the gasoline to make sure there was nothing in the gas tank or the gas line. i put a new needle in the carburator also. So please give me some more ideas to try. PLEASE

Sounds like maybe your choke is stuck ON.

I'm probably sounding like a jerk, but are you sure the little choke butterfly is not closed? I've managed to have it closed when I thought it was open.

Going back to Tom's post, did you check the flywheel key? Also, although it doesn't really sound like the problem, there's not a lot left, and I didn't see it mentioned, so try cleaning the fuel cap; the cap is vented, and if plugged will create a vacuum in the tank, effectively reducing or shutting off the flow of fuel.
