Briggs & Stratton sump 697188

I snapped a connecting rod on my B&S model 31p977 engine and have it all apart assessing the damage. Connecting rod in about 10 pieces and all else looks to be in good low mileage condition except the broken rod took out a section of the sump casting webbing internally. I can post a pic I found of the sump. The piece broke out looks like a semicircular baffle of some sort with a notch in it. Anyone know what it's for and if it's critical to the operation? Broke out clean within the semicircle. Not sure you can see it in the pic though.

Really hate to buy a new one if it's just webbing.
