Bolen or Poulan push mower?

Okay, neither will probably win any awards; but I need a push mower asap to mow my lawn (just moved into a new house). The front yard is small and easy. That's where I really need to mow. The back yard is fairly large and more park-like (patches of grass, dirt, etc.). I think I'm still going to need a weed-eater at some point, but i'd like to use my mower back there as well. So, it's going to need to be somewhat sturdy to handle uneven terrain.

Basically, on my local craigslist, there is:

Bolen 3.5 hp -- $75
Poulan 4.5 hp -- $60

both look to be in about the same shape.

Is this a no-brainer? I have no experience with either. I gave my last craftsman to a neighborhood kid before I moved.

thanks

There is no meaningful difference between ANY of the brand names.
When you're ready to buy new... you don't have to spend much more
to get a perfectly adequate mower (LINK -- just $179)

When buying used it's about the seller and it's use/care history. If either of those is from the local mower repair shop where someone with a clue has gone over them and will be there next week (or in August) if/when you have a problem... go for it.

I'd wait a few months for new better offers on ebay...then buy one around the fall.

LOL

Bolen or Poulan push mower?

i bought what was once a Bolen, the guy had pieced parts together from various broken lawnmowers and painted them..so the picture on craigslist was misleading. i'm probably an idiot, but i got him to throw in a gas can.

Cheap mowers are cheap mowers, regardless of brand name. Sharpen the blade (or put on a new one), keep fresh oil & gas in it, and it'll run for a long time.

That said, what about getting a little exercise? Buy a reel-type push mower? No maintenance.

...and yes, you'll eventually want a line trimmer.
