Blade Adapter/Pulley (421782) star has broke off

So this star piece shattered off the pulley. (amazon image shows it well) I apparently didnít put the blade back on quite right. Was making a noise, so after 100í feet of mowing I checked underneath and when I took off the blade again, pieces of the start fell off.

I put blade back on, cranked the nut down tighter and it cut grass fine. Do I actually need to get get a new adapter? could i just leave it like it is, or put a lock washer on the where that start was? seems like it is prone to breaking.

Blade would slip if you tryed to cut deeper grass.
As cheap as that part is I'd replace it.
Plan on having to replace all the bolts also.
More often then not they snap off when removing.

Blade Adapter/Pulley (421782) star has broke off

thanks, i'll replace it.
last mower had a "T" mount with two pegs, worked fine.

the way this sheared off, looks like it was meant to do it.

Blade Adapter/Pulley (421782) star has broke off

not to revive an old thread but I have this same problem. i have gone through 3 of these this season. it seems the mower has too much torque.

I have Sears Craftsman 917.374356 mower and it has a 7hp Briggs and Stratton engine. I have had this mower for about 5 years and never had a problem until I took the blade off last year at seasons end and all the star things just crumbled. I got my 3rd one yesterday and put it on and started the mower. Before I evem got started into the grass I stopped and checked it and the blade spun all the way around. I took the blade off and all of the pieces came raining down. I took one of the old ones and drilled holes where the star points were and put small stainless screws in with the blade thinking this would hold th blade from spinning. when I put it all together and cut about 20 feet and checked, iyt had sheared my screws. please help! Are these parts defective?

Blade Adapter/Pulley (421782) star has broke off

There are lawn tractors that use nothing but the friction of a Belleville washer ( cupped lock washer ) to drive the blades. Check at Ace hardware or a mower repair shop that may have an extra laying around that would fit.

If you replace the adapter again, I would consider replacing the blade as well. If the star hole is widened out in the blade or if the blade is bent or out of balance, it can cause it to tear up the adapters.

It goes on the driveshaft of the engine. It has a key way on the inside and the blade bolts onto the star portion. The pulley is for the self propel portion.

after loggin off, i realized what that did. the star turns the blade and is for when you hit something, the star shears off. so that the crank, or whatever, doesn't bend/break.
