Best gas powered lawn edger under $400

Hello,
I had a Craftsman gas powered edger for over 20 years. I think it needed repair twice (I babied it, changed the oil & filter, etc.) Finally I was told it needed a cabureator and that part was no longer available (after waiting 4 months). So I had to but a new one, and ended up with a Troy Built (I forget the model #). I may have just gotten a lemon, or perhaps the design was poor, but in the two years I owned it it was in the shop more than it was in my shed. I finally gave it away when i would have to spend more than I paid for it to repair it for the third time.

The pros and cons of the Craftsman and Troy Built
Craftsman - Blade did not rotate when raised
Troy - Blade always rotates

Craftsman - cutting depth was set by adjusting blade height (easy)
Troy - cutting depth set by wheel height (and kinda a pain to do)

Craftsman - ran well under varying loads
Troy - never ran right, always seemed like it was about to stall (even after two trips to repair center)

Craftsman - ran for 20 years
Troy - didn't make two full seasons (1 year warranty)

Any suggestions on a good edger, preferably with the features of the Craftsman (although I think they all adjust blade height by adjusting wheel height now).

P.S. I found a GREAT one for $1,000. I am trying to keep it under $400.
Thanx!

I used to be them dozen at a time. Brand names changed but a good Briggs & Stratton used to work. I always looked for the sturdiness of frame, blade housing and shaft construction. Things can be dangerous.

Do you have a real outdoor lawn equipment store near you? I would be shopping there if you.

Or did you mean a gas-powered string trimmer?
