B&S keeps striping starter gear

My 14 yr old Yard Machine goes through the plastic bendix starter gear like crazy. Typically I go through 1 each mowing season then strips out but just replaced it again and got about 4 mows out of this one then striped again

I didn't see any adjustment where the starter mounts to the motor or where a shim would be added. Im perplexed here, ideas? Would battery voltage (weak battery) cause the gear to strip? too much compression in the motor? issues with the starter itself or the guide/spring for the gear?

Sounds like the starter is not shimmed properly. Have you ever replaced the starter? Yes too much torque on the two parts can cause the starter and/or engine to tear up the gears.

At 14 years on the engine. Along with the amount of maintenance hours spent fixing it. Probably time to just trade it in at the local Lawn mower shop for a new unit.

Maybe something bad, maybe something good. I guess we'll never know, 'cause you're going to guard it. You won't touch it, will you?

The starter probably needs to be replaced. My guess is that it's not retracting the cog fast enough and it's hitting the flywheel.

QUOTE: too much compression in the motor?

Regardless whether this is the problem, if the engine is a valve in head and the valves have never been adjusted it it way past due. If the valve lash is too great it will cause too much compression at cranking speed.

Try applying a little grease to the starter gear

Just put the gear on and started up ok (for now). Lawnmower repair shop guy said maybe the battery is too strong for the starter but unfortunately its common which is why the guy had a 5gal bucket of these gears sitting on the floor near the checkout counter. If I can get through this season the mower will be getting replaced.

Unfortunately the repair shop guy doesn't know what he is talking about or blowing smoke.
If your tractor has a standard lawn tractor battery and more importantly OEM starter that ain't gonna happen.
