24 h/p running rich


hello gotta 24 h.p. briggs motor model446777, type 0244E1 not even sure what carb its got on it but when it starts it runs fine for bout 10 seconds, then it strats blowing black smoke runs real rough can even pull the deck into gear, the carb is the one that has the switch on the bottom of it if that makes any difference to anybody?? a while back it started to be starving for gas would only run with the choke out ! now getting to much gas

In this order, I would clean or replace the air filter, per the manufacturer's recommendations, check that the carburetor mounting bolts or nuts are tight, check that the linkages are secure, and run some Sea Foam through it. If that doesn't work, I would remove and thoroughly clean the carburetor, and adjust it to the manufacturer's recommendations at that time, but count the turns on your idle screws, etc. first, so that if it does not run you can at least return to where you are at now.
