yard stone firepit

Im building a pit in my backyard. Where i decided to dig i struck a gold mine of medium to large stones. Can i use these for the firepit? Should i put fire bricks in between the pit and the yard stones? I plan to pour a concrete footing about a foot tall and to mortar the rocks together.

Some stone are safer than others, but in general, it's safest to guard any natural stone from direct heat with firebrick, steel ring, etc....
