What is the minimum aggregate base depth for a patio?

I have read online that a 4 inch aggregate base is used for a patio. Is there a minimum that would cause problems in the future? I assume a contractor may quote a smaller aggregate base to save money.

Im not aware of any code or minimum, but the standard i go by would be no less then 3.5 inches of tamped stone/sand base. Strong substrate=strong concrete.
