Using Belgian block to form slate covered stoop
We are reconfiguring out house--new front door is in and sill is flashed.
I wanted to add a low stoop for the step up into the house.
I first planned to pour a simple concrete pad--but I acquired some Belgian block (granite sets) and slate and wondered about the feasibility of outlining the stoop with Belgian block set on end, filling the center area (combination of gravel and ?) and then laying slates on top.
The immediate area from the corner of the driveway to the stoop would be done in the same slate.
Would this work? If so, what would I need to do for a footing under the block (I'm assuming that I can't just lay them the way you would do driveway edging?)
Should I dry lay the slate on the rest of the area and use polymeric sand--or try to wet lay the whole area?--it is probably 10' x 20' but an irregular shape.
