seal around outer fireplace

We have a cabin from the 1930's and the black jack has cracked and is falling away from the outside of the fireplace bricks. It looks as though they had placed chicken type wire as a base and covered the wire with black jack. Is this still an appropriate way to seal the outside fireplace bricks to the cabin?

Got a picture?
This was not the right way to do it in the first place.

Black Jack is just a brand name, the one he's talking about looks like this.

Not right off. The cabin is in Minnesota, however, will be there in a couple of weeks. Will send a picture or a better description. Thanks
