Retiling the INSIDE of a firebox?

DIYers,

Last year we bought a house from 1911 and the inside of the firebox has (had) approximately 2" square tiles up to the integrated ash-dump. It is all breaking apart, and now I'm not sure what to do.. Is it possible/advisable to try to repair the damage here? Are these a certain sort of special tile that resists heat? What about thinset/mortar?

I read another post on this forum where a DIYer redid a similar situation with Marble tiles, but he didn't seem to use his fireplace for actual fires (we plan to occasionally - heat loss aside).

Can anyone point me in the proper direction here? Any advise? Ideally I think I'd like to find the same tile and just re-do those areas that have crumbled, but we'll be in the house for some time hopefully and would like to do it correctly.

Thank YOU!

I'll move this to concrete and masonry for you---that looks like a job or a mason--

There's a lot of different size fire brick out there, and you'll need refractory cement also, this site might be of some help, hope you can find the size you need.

You could cut those out of standard red firebrick no problem.
