Reface a fireplace

Hey fellow DIYers,
I would like to reface my fireplace with granite(preferably 1 giant slab), or tiles. Fireplace is 8x 8
and I do not knw whether to call a tile guy or a mason. Also, what thickness can I et away with?

I'd be contacting a company that makes stone counter tops.
There going to have the know how and tools to cut it to size.
I'd let them do the whole job. There's a very real chance it may crack transporting or installing. Let them worry about it.
8 X 8 X 13 Lb. per sq. ft. = 832 lb.
(that's for 3/4" thick)
