OK to to mix and pour one bag at a time for a concrete step?

Hi There...

QUESTION: I'm pouring a concrete step that requires five 60-pound bags of premixed concrete. Is it okay to mix and pour one bag at a time? It takes me about five minutes to mix each bag. I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter from a structural perspective, but I do worry that it might make a difference in how nice a result I get when I trowel the face of the step smooth.

Thanks for your help!

BACKGROUND FOR THOSE WHO WANT IT:

I'm adding a concrete step atop an existing concrete landing and I've read plenty of advice on the process of making forms, pouring, troweling, and edging the steps, and removing the face board on the risers in order to trowel the step faces.

Unless you place concrete in extreme heat, it is not going to start setting up for at least half an hour, so you are fine placing one bag at a time. Just make sure you prepare the mix according the recipe on the bag, do not use too much water.

And thoroughly rinse the container between batches. The steps may take a month to reach full compressive strength.

I never rinse my container/wheelbarrow between batches. Clean up when you are done.

Doesn't it cause the new batch to set up too fast?

Don't wait that long. Dump it start a new batch. Old batch has no effect on new batch. I don't mix a lot in a wheelbarrow. I normally use a mixer and would waste too much water and time to clean out after every load. It would also make a big mess of the work area with all that water.
