Need waterproof advice/outdoor fountains

I have two brick planters on each side of my front steps (2' tall, 3' X 2.5'). Basically brick walls boxes on a concrete slab attached to my front porch. They were smoothed out with mortar and I used a rubber paint to waterproof so I could put fountains and fish in. It was too much of a job each year ripping off the rubber and repainting. I have removed the rubber and the mortar mix. Wanted to tile the inside with glass tile and use for fountains only.

I have removed the mortar and was planning on putting in concrete board, using the special bond quickset for water/outdoors and epoxy grout. I fear that the water will seep through the brick though. Any correct solutions would be greatly appreciated.
