Question

Masonry/Fireplace Sealing

The fireplace in our home "crumbles" (not sure how else to describe it). The mortar and bricks are all secure and un-cracked, but the mantel & hearth needs dusting nearly every day because of all the debris that falls.

My thought is to somehow seal the bricks/mortar so that they will stop this crumbling, but I'm unsure of what products to use OR if this can/should even be done.

Any suggestions or guidance?

Masonry/Fireplace Sealing

From what I can tell, the crumbs come from all over - not one specific area. This picture shows only a section of the mantel, but you get the idea. It's all across the mantel and also on the hearth/floor underneath - so I know it's falling from more of an area than just right above the mantel itself.
