Man swallowed by sinkhole

36-year-old man swallowed up in sinkhole in his Seffner home presumed dead

Could this happen even with new homes? I wonder what the cost is for the "extrodinary measures" described below. I'd want one of those 35-ft wide dropout resistant mats under my home.

The mat is not 35 feet wide. It is as long and as wide as the hospital is.

It is designed so that a 35 foot wide hole can develop under it, without the mat giving way, even if the hole is centered under a support column.

"I'd want one of those 35-ft-wide-dropout resistant mats" would be clearer but I thought it would look weird.

I watched a couple of news reports and read a few articles but no mention of how to find a contractor who will use state of the art methods for finding sinkholes or anything about the kind of mat mentioned in my top post. I found that section of the book after about one minute of research on Google. It doesn't take a 60 Minutes style investigation to properly inform the public. So I guess people building homes in Florida will just figure there's nothing they can do and they'll trust the typical site investigation and building methods out of ignorance.
