How to fill 1" joint in concrete driveway?

What do I use to fill an extra large 1" joint between sections of concrete in my driveway.

It has a plastic backer rod inserted in the gap but other than that it's just dirt. It seems like any kind of concrete filler would easily crack.

40 year old house -- do you think there was caulk in the joint originally and it's just worn out over time?

My guess would be there was some sort of divider strip like wood or tarred expansion joint material.

if i knew where in no ga, i could stop by & seal it on the way to ride the dragon

that ' plastic backer rod ' may be what's commonly call'd a ' zip strip ' but, from what i've seen, no one zips off the top & seals the joint,,, izzit like the stuff you'd see on pool decks ?

nevertheless, closed cell backer rod & 100% silicone no more than 3/8" thick,,, that's what we used on 78, 185, & 20 ' tool ' the stuff so it adheres well to clean joint sidewalls
