How to clean a chimney

Hello, just purchased a new home and need to find out all the information I need to sweep and clean the chimney myself. Is anyone a pro at this and can give me some info? Costs? Materials? Cheaper ways? Time consuming? Haven't moved in yet but would like to be prepared. Thank you! =D

I would not do it.
Hire a sweep and there not only going to have all the equipment to do it right and not leave a mess but there going to be inspecting it for cracks or anything else from top to bottom that might cause a roof leak or fire.

Are we talking a traditional chimney or a simple metal piping stack?
The circular jobs (from wood stoves) are very easy to clean.

Ayuh,... At a bare minimum ya need a ladder that'll get ya to the top of the chimney, a brush of the proper size, 'n enough handle sections for it to reach to the bottom of the flue...

There are kits and tools that will let you do it yourself, but for safety's sake I would have a professional do it the first time. Like Joe said, a professional can inspect it for problems or defects that your home inspection wouldn't catch.
Look for someone licensed and experienced. A place that sells and installs fireplace inserts is a good place to start your search.
